Future fathers who are under the age of 18 should be allowed to recognise their child by law, PL MP Amanda Spiteri Grech said on Wednesday.

During a parliamentary session, Spiteri Grech, who is a family lawyer by profession, said that she will make it her mission to make sure that this legal anomaly changes.

Referring to future parents to whom she has been in talks with, she said that a future father who is under 18 wants to recognise his future child legally, but cannot because of his age.

The expecting mother who is 16-years old will be able to recognise the child as her own, but will be forced by law to be recognised as a single mother, explained the lawyer.

"I am going to make sure that this (legal) anomaly changes" said the PL MP

She added that the teen should not have to shoulder the legal responsibility of the child alone, especially when there is the father who wants to provide for their child.
