Former museums director Fr Marius Zerafa has passed away at the age of 93.
Dominican friar Zerafa is best known for his role in the recovery of Caravaggio's St Jerome. His book, "The Stolen Caravaggio" told the story of how the painting had been stolen in the 1980s, and how he helped in its recovery.
Zerafa was a distinguished art academic.
The Labour Party issued a statement, sending its condolences to his family. Zerafa was also the nephew of former Prime Minister Paul Boffa.
The Malta Society of Arts, in a Facebook post, said it was saddened to hear about the passing of Father Marius Zerafa OP, and would like to send its heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
"Fr. Marius Zerafa was awarded the MSA's prestigious Gold Medal in 2011 for his contribution to the arts."
