Monday, 24 October 2022, 11:41 Last update: about 3 years ago

The Malta Union of Teachers said that the rector of St Albert the Great College is appointing a police officer to carry out some duties at the school, including serving as a supervisor to students.

The college and the police have denied this.

The MUT said that this has been confirmed by various sources from the school, including teachers. This officer was recruited without a call for applications and is using disciplinary measures that are commonly used in disciplined corps, the union said.

The union has complained about the matter with the Church and the Education Ministry, it said in a statement.

The MUT said the rector is not fulfilling his duties properly and is running the school in an amateurish way.

The MUT said that the college is operating without a licence and the rector is creating more chaos in an attempt to solve the crisis he created.

In a statement, the college rector and administration denied that police officers are employed to supervise children.

As part of activities organised for the students, two police officers were at the college on Wednesday to speak about the role of the police in the community.

The police also issued a statement to deny the MUT claim, saying that two police officers had been authorised to speak about police work at the school on 12 October

The police said that on 21 October, one of the officers was at the college and was asked by the rector to assist in the supervision of a class for a few minutes, during which time the officer told the students about police work.
