Saturday, 29 October 2022, 09:48 Last update: about 3 years ago

From an abandoned area of 190m², Hibiscus Garden  has been transformed into the first pocket garden, thanks to Parks Malta. This pocket garden will serve as an example to other parks and gardens which will be regenerated in the coming months and years.

Hibiscus Garden in San Ġwann was officially inaugurated by the Minister for the Environment, Energy and Enterprise Miriam Dalli, together with Parks Malta General Director Adrian Attard and San Ġwann Mayor Trevor Fenech.

“In the last months various open spaces projects were launched across Malta. Through a collaboration with Parks Malta and Local Councils we are working to develop and transform open spaces at the heart of the community, so that residents can enjoy a better environment close to their home,” said Minister Dalli.

Minister Miriam Dalli explained how this San Ġwann project will serve as an example on how Parks Malta will be implementing other open spaces within the community, based on the needs and wishes of the local council and the community in general.

Hibiscus Garden now has various benches, tress, water fountain and various aromatic herbs which compliments this open space. Specific plants were planted according to Malta’s climate, as they require specific temperatures to grow and flourish.

The Hibiscus Garden is also equipped with rainwater harvesting irrigation system, which automatically irrigates the plants accordingly.

The aim of such projects is to give a breath of fresh air to residents living in urban areas around Malta, where dilapidated areas are being transformed into green open spaces. Therefore, residents will not need to go out of their locality to enjoy nature.

“This garden is situated in an urban area, and we assured to have trees and plants which absorb carbon emissions,” explained Minister Dalli.

On the other hand, Parks Malta General Director Adrian Attard said that Parks Malta is collaborating with various Local Councils, so that Parks Malta continues implementing the Government’s vison on having more open spaces.
