Premier League: Valletta return to winning ways

After a six-match barren spell Valletta returned to winning ways beating Balzan 3-1 to receive a much needed boost.

This win slightly lifts the Citizens to a healthier position in the table even though this victory does not solve all Valletta’s problems.

For Balzan a step backwards after their draw against Floriana and the side needs to recover the good form shown at the start of the season.

However it was an entertaining  match with Valletta having the edge and sealing the win with a third goal in the final seconds of the match

After barely five minutes Valletta had their first attempt with a Paiber freekick well saved by Debono.

Three minutes later balzan’s first attempt at goal when Zlatkovic passed towards Bojan Kaljevic, but the latter’s shot went wide.

On eleven minutes Valletta broke the deadlock when Akpoveta’s cross was brilliantly met by Kilian Bevis who headed beayutifully home.

Balzan took some time to recover but went close ten minutes later when Satariano blasted wide following a melee in front of the Valletta goal.

On 23 minutes Valletta went very close to double the score when Paiber’s corner was met by Akpoveta who fired towards goal, but his effort was cleared off the goal lione by Fenech.

On 34 minutes another Valletta good move with Eslit Sala crossing towards Akpoveta whose header just missed the target.

On 35 minutes Balzan drew level when Satariano passed towards Uros Ljubomoirac whose low shot completely deceived Guarnone.

Just before the break another Balzan opportunity with Satariano’s drive saved by Guarnone with the ball finishing against the post.

Five minutes into the second half Valletta missed a sitter with Akpoveta’s point blank drive saved by Debono.

On 62 minutes Kaljevic and Torres combined well with the latter’s shot going inches wide.

On 65 minutes Valletta regained the lead when from a Brandon Paiber corner, Akpoveta towered over the rest to head home a beauty.

This was a major blow for Balzan who pushed forward but were not convincing in front of goal.

Valletta controlled the match treasuring their slender lead till the 90th minute when the Citizens sealed the issue with a third goal, a goal scored by Shaun Dimech direct from a freekick.
