PN presents motion to amend legal notices over ‘stolen’ money from electricity and water bills

The Nationalist party on Friday presented a motion to amend the Legal Notices so that Maltese and Gozitans receive back all the money which was stolen from the overcharging of electricity and water bills.

Legal Notices 243 and 244 of 2022 must be amended so that anyone whose money has been stolen from the electricity and water billing system can receive back not only the money they paid extra this year, but also those who have overpaid in previous years.

The content of the Legal Notices enforces what the PN has been maintaining about how the “cumulative annual consumption” should be worked out.

The PN said that in order to truly do justice to these Legal Notices, they must come into force with effect from 1 January 2014, when consumers started receiving the current bills every two months.

The Legal Notices published by the government say that people will be given back the money from the period starting from 1 January 2022.

The PN said that it has been talking about this theft since 2018 and confirmed it with a wide exercise it had done. It said that government itself had recognized and admitted that this was happening, but let it go on for years. The PN continued that this was also confirmed by the Auditor General and by the court last July.

“The least one expects when they have been robbed is not only that the theft will stop, but that they will get back whatever has been overpaid,” the PN said.

The motion was signed by PN MPs Mark Anthony Sammut, Ryan Callus, David Agius and Karol Aquilina.
