NGO Repubblika on Saturday called out Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa over the ‘pathetic attempt’ to blame everything on the Attorney General.

Gafa spoke in an interview with Andrew Azzopardi on his radio programme on 103 Malta’s Heart, where he shifted the responsibility regarding the Pilatus Bank scandal to the Attorney General.

“Gafa, Deputy Commissioner Alexandra Mamo and AG Victoria Buttigieg ended up blaming each other for this obscenity,” Repubblika said.

It said that Gafa’s words confirmed what President of the NGO Robert Aquilina revealed during the protest two weeks ago, where he said that the Attorney General signed a document that is being kept hidden and that she ordered that two of the Pilatus Bank robbers would not be brought to Court.

“Now it is too late for Gafa' to blame anyone else. He is an accomplice in an attempt to prevent justice from being carried out in this criminal case. We know very well what his responsibility is, just as we know what Alexandra Mamo's and Victoria Buttigieg's responsibilities are,” Repubblika said.

Repubblika said that it will continue to insist in court and on the streets that justice is done.

The PN has also reacted to Gafa’s comments in his interview, saying that the Justice Minister has remained silent to the wrongs made by the AG.

“This is confirmation that the AG and the Justice Minister are complicit in covering up the Pilatus Bank scandal,” it said on Saturday.

PN spokesperson for Justice Karol Aquilina said that in his words, Gafa put all the responsibility on the AG, as he knows that she has made bad decisions regarding the case.

The AG granted a pardon by issuing a nolle prosequi to two people involved in the Pilatus Bank scandal. “For his part, the Minister for Justice is refusing to give details in Parliament about the issuance of nolle prosequi by the Attorney General during the last years,” it said.

The PN said that the AG must start being transparent in the consequences of her decisions. It said that the AG is expected to publicly state the names of these two people and give a full and detailed account of the decisions she made in relation to this case.

The Nationalist party also said that the Justice Minister must start ensuring that the institutions of the country work as they should, and not stand idly by watching them consistently fail in the performance of their duties.
