Gilbert Agius, the Malta Under-21 coach, will take charge of the national team on an interim basis for the upcoming friendly matches against Greece and Ireland, being played at the National Stadium on 17th and 20th November, the Malta Football Association announced on Tuesday.

The appointment of Agius as interim coach was announced by Malta FA President Bjorn Vassallo during the General Assembly held at the Centenary Hall. Agius, who has been at the helm of the Malta Under-21 team since March 2021, takes over from Devis Mangia who resigned as Malta coach on Monday.

Agius, a former Malta captain who has made 119 appearances for the national team, will be working together with Davide Mazzotta, the national team’s senior assistant coach, and Alessandro Zinnari who has been promoted to the role of assistant coach following the departure of Guillermo Giacomazzi who left his position within the national team’s technical set-up a few months ago to take up a coaching post at club level in Italy.
