The Left think-tank organisation Zminijietna on Sunday appealed to the cabinet to legislate to make it illegal to hire persons for work without a 'work contract'. Companies caught exploiting these people should have their license withdrawn for a maximum of two years, the group said in a statement.

Zminijietna added that "Irregular migrants are the most affected and are more vulnerable to workplace accidents. Also, stories of undocumented migrants residing in Malta is becoming the order of the day. These people are being denied the right to a decent job and a basic standard of living. Many of these people find work in the construction sector. Between January and June of 2022, work accidents in the construction sector amounted to 13% ".

Additionally, the leftist organisations insist that "a better enforcement system should be in place that treats people humanely, while penalising abusive and exploitative practices".

Zminijietna thanked the Government for the measures announced that protect platform workers, that include the right to leave, a minimum wage, paid overtime and other standard benefits under a new legislative package".
