Hibernians emerged winners for the second time in the space of four days when they beat Floriana by a solitary Jake Grech goal.

If last Thursday it had to be the penalties to decide the winners, this time around the match was not so tight as the Super Cup Final. This win puts the Paolites back into second place but still trailing leaders Hamrun Spartans by seven points.

Changes were effected by both coaches for this match with Haber starting in goal instead of Kone for Hibernians whereas Degabriele came on as a second half substitute. Muritala and Mensah also started for the Paolites.

As for Floriana missing for them central defender El Hasni who missed the crucial penalty that gave the Super Cup to Hibernians. For the Greens this result was a setback in their quest to climb up the ladder since at the end of the first round they are in a mid-table position.

The first half was a balanced affair with Floriana going near on 19 minutes when Reid made his way forward but his central shot caused Haber no problems at all. Eight minutes from the break an Arias free kick was punched away by Haber.

But it was Hibernians who scored what proved to be the winner in first half stoppage time. Jake Grech received the ball in the area and his quick reflexes made him drive the ball past a helpless Kitanov.

Floriana could have levelled matters in the 54th minute when substitute Ciolacu with only Haber to beat missed out.

Hibernians responded just past the hour when Muritala found Mensah with Diakite coming in and shooting over the bar.

Floriana were dealt a severe blow on 77 minutes when Rutjens was given the marching orders.

Till the end it was Hibernians who controlled well with Floriana finding it difficult to mount a reaction in order to save the day.
