New police cars and uniforms but still no action against ‘friends of friends’ – Repubblika

Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa has been in his position for 32 months and although the police have changed their cars and uniforms he has still not taken action against “friends of friends,” NGO Repubblika president Robert Aquilina.

On Tuesday morning in front of the police headquarters in Floriana, Aquilina slammed Gafa for his inaction to prosecute multiple different cases of people in power who have obstructed justice in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Aquilina listed examples of the police failing to take action.

He named previous police commissioner Lawrence Cutajar, former chief of staff Keith Schembri, Yorgen Fenech who is awaiting trial and former police assistant police commissioner Silvio Valletta.

Aquilina said there is evidence that Schembri texted a copy of a presidential pardon to Melvin Theuma for the Fenech, however, Gafa has still not taken action.

He added that Vince Muscat, who was found guilty of his role in Caruana Galizia’s murder, testified that former minister Chris Cardona had brought up a plan to murder Caruana Galizia earlier.

Lastly, he said that the police have not acted on a report by the auditor general which showed that several government directors paid themselves unauthorised bonuses and had yet to return the funds.

“To Angelo Gafà I say: do you not realize that you are not only ridiculing yourself but also the entire police corps and the whole country?” Aquilina asked.

“Our country deserves a police force that does its duty with integrity and is not afraid to hold up the mirror of justice to those in power.”
