€846 million invested in the educational sector over legislative year – Education Minister

€846 million has been invested in the education sector over the last legislative year, Education minister Clifton Grima said in a press conference on Wednesday.

He said that this record amount of funds has been allocated to his ministry in order to invest on several measures "in order to ascertain that students have access to the best tools to reach their full potential".

On the anniversary of completing the first year out of five of this legislature, the minister reminded of the several achievement that the PL has achieved over the last 12 months.

From the government paying for MATSEC examinations, to investing a total of €33 million in stipends for the benefit of 17,000 students in tertiary institutions, Grima reminded how it is of utmost important that students and teachers alike are kept at the centre of educational investment.

Apart from other measures, the minister said that it is thanks to a labour government that now some 33,000 children coming from a mix of independent and church school, like government school children are also benefiting from free transportation.

He added that records show how the number of early school leavers has halved in the past decade.

PL MP Amanda Spiteri Grech said that thanks to an increase of €90 in the children's allowance around €6 million has been left in the pockets of many families.

She added that now more than ever, Maltese families are benefitting from stable utility bills and a decrease in taxes as part of the governments "guarantee for children" initiative, which was part of the PL's electoral manifesto.

Delving into other measures over the last year, Spiteri Grech said that it was under a PL government that every primary school child now has a tablet. She added that now Secondary school children will also be given a laptop, starting from the coming scholastic year.
