The mother of Jean Paul Sofia, Isabelle Bonnici, laid a wreath at the worker’s monument in Msida, in memory of all those workers who lost their lives at the workplace.
20-year-old Jean Paul Sofia died last December after a building collapsed on him, at a construction site in Kordin.
A statement published by a group of friends and family who Sofia who is calling for a public inquiry into his death said: “With this gesture, Isabelle is emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the life and health of all workers, who with so much perseverance and sacrifice provide a living for their families.”
It added that Bonnici’s goal is to fight for justice and make sure that workers are never victims of greed and carelessness;
“It is therefore important to open a public inquiry parallel to the magisterial inquiry into the death of Jean Paul Sofia.”
It explained that a public inquiry can point out where the institutions failed and it can shed light on errors in the system and give the necessary recommendations to change or amend the law to protect the workers’ lives.
