NGO backs suggestion for commissioners for mental health, children, elderly to fall under Ombudsman

Thursday, 4 May 2023, 17:12 Last update: about 3 years ago

NGO Repubblika has backed a proposal by Ombudsman Joseph Zammit McKeon for the commissioners for mental health, children and the elderly to operate under the umbrella of the ombudsman's office.

Judge Joseph Zammit McKeon was reported by the Times of Malta to have made the suggestion during a talk he gave at a law seminar.

Repubblika said that such a measure would mean that if administrative injustices in these sectors occur, the victims would be given the protection of the Ombudsman who is independent of the government and who instead reports to Parliament.

Repubblika also said that the attitude by many ministers and public entities who drag their feet when asked to collaborate by the Ombudsman must change. The NGO said that such entities often then ignore the recommendations given by the Ombudsman, which increases the injustice suffered by victims.

The NGO called on government to implement the Ombudsman's decisions.
