A joint operation between Identity Malta Agency officers, the Police's Immigration Unit, and Jobsplus led to the arrest of ten foreign workers on suspicion of working without required working documents.

An investigation carried out by Identity Malta’s Compliance Unit was concluded with a joint inspection with the Police and Jobslus on a construction site in Marsascala, where 11 foreign workers were arrested, one of whom was later released after it was established that he had the proper documentation.

The other ten workers remained in police custody.  Nine of the workers were deported to their home countries, while another worker with a Greek residence permit was deported to Greece, Identity Malta said.

Identity Malta's Compliance Unit conducts thorough investigations into alleged illegalities involving foreign nationals residing and working in Malta to ensure compliance with legal requirements.

The authority reminded that it is the employer's responsibility and duty to guarantee that all employees are in possession of the required Maltese permits that allow them to work and reside legally in Malta. Identity Malta Agency urges companies to take the required steps to determine their employees' legal status. Foreign workers, particularly those from countries outside the European Union, should have a Residence Permit that includes the employer's information as well as the role for which he or she is employed.
