A man from Radford travelled back to Malta to retrieve a mobile phone he had lost at sea and which was found by a diver – still in working condition, a Coventry newspaper reported Thursday.

Luke Plummer thought he would never see his phone again after he lost it on the last day of his holiday while out kayaking with friends in St Thomas Bay, Coventry Live reported.

“But to his utter surprise a diver found it in the sea - and it was still working! Maltese police managed to get his home number from his emergency contacts and explained the phone had been found,” the report said.

On his return home, he was contacted by Malta Police who told him that they could not send it back. The British Embassy, he was told, did not deal with “lost property” and so his only option was to travel back to Malta to retrieve it.

The phone, according to its specifications, is water resistant for 30 minutes but the device was still working when it was retrieved from the seabed many hours after it ended up there.

It would have cost more to replace the phone than to come back to Malta to retrieve it, Plummer told Coventry Live.
