Residents of Żurrieq may finally enjoy their replenished local windmill for the first time since it was severely damaged following a storm in March 2022, after it was inaugurated following a full restoration by the Ministry for Public Works and Planning.

This restoration project was inaugurated by the Minister for Public Works and Planning, Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, and the mayor of Żurrieq, Rita Grima. The 18th century windmill was restored to its original state through careful work done by skilled carpenters from the Manufacturing and Services Directorate, a government statement said.

During his speech, Minister Zrinzo Azzopardi praised the Żurrieq local council, the Public Works Department, all volunteers, and all the workers involved in the restoration of the windmill’s old parts. He stated that it was a rigorous and extensive job that included the total reconstruction of its antennae, vents, central beam, and roof. These works should see the windmill return as a central attraction within Żurrieq for tourists and locals.

Minister Zrinzo Azzopardi then said how this project was important due to the landmark’s historical heritage for Żurrieq and for the Maltese islands. He then claimed that the government must burden responsibility in improving the preservation of such cultural sites to highlight their importance towards Maltese local culture.

Żurrieq mayor, Rita Grima, then thanked the ministry and all workers involved for their contributions in this full restoration and partial reconstruction in so that the windmill may be appreciated in its now current and ideal state.
