Widespread anger, and some support, on social media as PM escapes political heat on yacht

The anger against Robert Abela continues to mount as the Prime Minister was pictured leaving Malta on his yacht while the country still reels from the vote taken against the holding of a public inquiry into the death of Jean Paul Sofia. A few others, however, expressed their support to the head of government.

Abela was pictured by Net TV (photo) as he left Malta on his yacht for a break on Friday morning, with the country still under shock following Wednesday’s vote.

Abela and his government voted against a public inquiry that will establish much more than a magisterial inquiry, when it is concluded, will do.

In an interview on Thursday, Abela expressed regret for attending a party at his official residence in Girgenti. Abela admitted that he “could have not gone, true,” when asked about criticism levelled against him for attending the event. But it appears that this regret was shortlived as the PM, in a green T-shirt and wearing a baseball cap, was pictured leaving the island by a Net TV crew.

The photo has since been making the rounds on social media, and has drawn more criticism than support. While some are arguing that everyone deserves a holiday, including the PM, others are pointing out that the PM is once again showing his insensitivity to the Sofia family who, on the same day, announced they will be holding a vigil on Monday.

Some commented that the PM is escaping the heat on two counts – the weather, as the temperature is set to rise sharply over the weekend, and the political heat in the aftermath of the vote in Parliament.
