Transport Minister Chris Bonett said in Parliament on Tuesday that his Ministry is currently conducting an exercise to look at how crash barriers across the Maltese islands can be improved.

Minister Bonett was replying to a question asked to him by PN MP Ivan Bartolo. The Nationalist Party MP asked whether there are any plans in place "to replace all crash barriers on our roads to make them safer, especially for motorcyclists."

The Minister for Transport and Infrastructure responded that while existing crash barriers comply by safety standards, "an exercise is presently underway" to establish how to improve them in the occurrence of a road accident.

On 27 May, a 35-year-old motorcyclist was the victim of a road accident. The motorcyclist tragically died upon impact on the St Paul's Bay by-pass after losing control of his Suzuki motorcycle. He was travelling towards Xemxija when he crashed into the barriers on the side of the main road.

It was the sixth road fatality of the year.
