Conference League: Ten-man Balzan qualify in extra time

Balzan needed extra time to eliminate Domzale yesterday and advance to the second round of the UEFA Conference League.

After the stunning first leg 4-1 victory in Slovenia Balzan were not expected to suffer that much to reach their goal.

But Domzale kept their fight till the very end, taking a 3-0 lead at the end of the 90 minutes to take the game to extra time.

But in extra time after missing a couple of good scoring opportunities Balzan scored the all important goal to qualify 5-4 on aggregate.

Shortly after scoring the decisive goal, Balzan were reduced to ten men, but Oliver Spiteri’s boys gave their hearts out to reach their goal.

Domzale created a couple of good chances in the first part of the game but the Balzan goalkeeper saved well.

Just before the break Balzan suffered the first goal when Nwankwo completely unmarked headed home.

On 63 minutes Domzale doubled the score with a rather soft goal scored direct from a freekick by Pisek.

Balzan lost all their composure and suffered a third ten minutes later when Kovacevic dribbled past the goalkeeper before putting at the back of the net.

Ironicllay with three goals down Balzan played the better football but failed to score.

In the fourth minute of extra time Andre scored the decisive goal for Balzan, with the same player sent off four minutes later.

But Balzan controlled the game having more scoring opportunities to obtain a deserved promotion to the second round.
