Malta's historical buildings have all been adapted to become spaces which are contemporary to the ages we're living in now, and St James Cavalier in Valletta has had the same treatment since 2000 becoming Malta's National Centre for Creativity. Spazju Kreattiv is now gearing up to launch its new 2023/2024 artistic programme this September.
Situated in Castille Place, Spazju Kreattiv is the perfect stop for anyone visiting Valletta. With something always going on related to any and every art form -- no matter your age and what sparks your interest. Established by Fondazzjoni Kreattività in the year 2000, St James Cavalier, Valletta, a 16th-century fort was converted into the National Centre for Creativity. We host a range of visual arts exhibitions at our gallery spaces, performances at our theatre in the round, workshops in our studios, an artist-in-residence programme, tailored events for children and their families under the ŻiguŻajg strand, films at the only arthouse cinema on the island.
As the sun graces us in the summer sky, our beloved arthouse cinema continues showing films from around the world including those who might be familiar to many. Our exciting lineup this July and August includes Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, National Theatre Live HIT Fleabag, Christopher Nolan's immersive film Oppenheimer, a documentary about singer Elvis Presley - Reinventing Elvis: The '68 Comeback, Penelope Cruz in L'Immensità and arthouse films The Damned Don't Cry and Medusa Deluxe. Choosing to focus on arthouse cinema brings a unique and enriching experience to our audience, and offers a departure from mainstream films and embraces a more experimental, thought-provoking, and artistic approach to storytelling. By showcasing arthouse films, we aim to provide our audience with a diverse range of narratives and perspectives that challenge conventional norms and delve into deeper themes.
Our summer months are the busiest behind the scenes with all our teams at Spazju Kreattiv working together to launch our upcoming yearly programme which includes all forms of creative arts. From visual to performing arts, film, and a new host of artists' residencies, the 2023 | 2024 Season will focus on our multifaceted culture, contribute to our local social commentary, reach out to different communities and strengthen our international collaborations. Not to mention, the return of ŻiguŻajg Season, which will give access to the creative arts to younger audiences. Here's what Daniel Azzopardi, Spazju Kreattiv's Artistic Director has to say about next year's programme.
"Building on the success of the previous years, the new programme of Spazju Kreattiv seeks to further establish our key role within the local creative sector and enhance our presence on the international circuit. This is achieved through more quality-driven initiatives and strategic collaborations with fellow international partners, leading to an enhanced season of events for the artists to nurture their ideas and the wider public to engage open-mindedly in matters of socio-political importance."
A rebranding effort will also allow the organisation to redefine its image, making it more relevant and appealing to contemporary audiences. It creates a sense of rejuvenation and adaptability, indicating that the organisation is evolving and staying ahead of trends in the creative industry. In collaboration with the Artistic Director, Luca Azzopardi, Spazju Kreattiv's own in-house designer creates a new set of aesthetics that propels our next season into a vibrant, colourful and surreal play of characters juxtaposed to the unique architecture of St James Cavalier, our sixteenth-century fortification home. Ultimately, this branding exercise invigorates the organisation's mission and fosters a renewed sense of excitement and engagement among artists, participants, and the public alike.
