Pope Francis sends Archbishop Scicluna on mission to Peru

Monday, 24 July 2023, 15:40 Last update: about 11 months ago

Archbishop Charles Scicluna is in Perù to undertake a mission entrusted to him by Pope Francis, the Curia said in a statement Monday.

During his visit, the Archbishop, who also serves as Adjunct Secretary for the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, will conduct a number of private meetings.

He is not in a position to comment or answer questions related to this mission, the Curia said.

Archbishop Scicluna is due to return to Malta next week.

The Curia did not disclose the reason behind the Pope's appointment, but the Catholic News Agency reported over the weekend that the Vatican commissioned a new investigation of the Sodalitium Christianae Vitae (Sodality of Christian Life), a lay society of apostolic life founded in Peru.

The investigation will be led by Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna, assistant secretary of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith and an expert on sexual abuse, the Peruvian newspaper La República reported on July 20.

Scicluna is accompanied by Monsignor Jordi Bertomeu, an official of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Years ago, both Vatican officials were sent by Pope Francis to deal with the sexual abuse scandal that rocked the Church in Chile. Bertomeu was recently commissioned to study the progress being made in Bolivia in the prevention of clerical sexual abuse in the midst of complaints against Jesuit priests.
