Norma Saliba resigns as TVM’s head of news

Tuesday, 25 July 2023, 19:42 Last update: about 3 years ago

Norma Saliba has resigned as TVM's head of news, she said in a Facebook post.

She had occupied the post since 2020, and has been harshly criticised as having a pro government bias during the course of her tenure.

"Over these years I worked to improve the news with a more organised structure and new ideas for TV, the online portal and radio. This, with the aim that journalists roam more in their reporting of local news and go to report news from abroad. They were also given the chance to present and produce current affairs programmes and in-house documentaries and, in particular, I gave opportunities to female journalists in this regard," she said.

She said that TVM won more than lost complaints made to the Broadcasting Authority. She said that in the last electoral campaign, no complaints or accusations were made by political parties or independent candidates about the reporting of news and discussion programmes.

"I never took revenge in my work and never took advantage of my position to back or break someone. Despite this over the past weeks I became a victim of a misleading campaign which had the sole scope of character assassination. Those who know me well did not believe the lies said about me." She said there is need for more protection of journalists and more respect for women in high positions.

She said she decided no longer to remain head of news for personal reasons, "even it I had more to contribute from my experience in this field."
