Swieqi garbage problem reaches ‘unbearable limits’ – mayor

Friday, 4 August 2023, 12:50 Last update: about 11 months ago

Swieqi mayor Noel Muscat has said that garbage problems in the locality have reached “unbearable limits”, saying that “drastic and concrete action needs to be taken without delay”.

Muscat said that the council has been trying to solve the problem together with the authorities since organic waste separation was introduced in November 2016.

“We know perfectly well the origins of the problem. During February 17 we informed the then minister of tourism about the problem and we offered solutions. Not only haven’t we solved the problem but it has expounded exponentially,” he said.

What is worse is that  the local council is being ridiculed and made to look incapable and useless.

“People point fingers at the local council when in reality they should point their fingers at Central Government that has never governed,” the mayor said.

“This is not right. Drastic and concrete action needs to be taken without further delay.”

In an email sent to Ministers Clayton Bartolo (tourism) and Miriam Dalli (environment), the mayor said that “on a daily basis we are facing very serious garbage problems. People (!!) are throwing large amounts of garbage in the roads freely and without fear.”

“This has to stop. We need to take serious and drastic action. We are already too late,” the mayor wrote.
