A mass was celebrated on Thursday evening on the shore of Marsaxlokk, after which a ceremony took place where the fishermen's boats and vessels were blessed ahead of the opening of the lampuki season.

This mass and ceremony are important due to their link to the culture of local fishing, the government said in a statement. It is organised yearly a few days prior to the opening of the lampuki season, which starts on the 15th of August and continues until the end of the year. For this year's season, 84 fishing vessels have been loaded with nets as well as other pieces of equipment which have been provided to them by the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture.

Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Animal Rights Alicia Bugeja Said was present amongst many fishermen and residents. She described the ceremony as a clear symbol and representation of the appreciation the Maltese have for the traditions and culture linked to fishing, and that all should appreciate the skill and work of our fishermen. "This sector is an important part of our identity as a nation because it is one that marries the traditional element with today's sustainable and technological practices." She regarded the important role that fishing plays in our country, and said that the work of local fishermen should be greatly appreciated throughout the year.

The mass and ceremony were blessed by members from the Diocese of the locality and the Marsaxlokk Parish Priest, Reverend George Spiteri.
