Rats, and bigger rats, causing health concern

Wednesday, 16 August 2023, 15:08 Last update: about 4 years ago

The social media has of late offered a platform for footage to be uploaded showing rats on Maltese roads and pavements.

And, while in the past, the presence of rats in our streets was mainly observed at night, the footage that has been uploaded on Facebook in the past days shows rodents becoming more courageous and appearing in broad daylight.

Nationalist MP Eve Borg Bonello and independent candidate Arnold Cassola have been among those who have posted footage of rats on social media.

And although it may not yet be described as an infestation, it is clear that the number of rats in public places is on the rise.

This is by and large a result of a waste collection system that has its faults, as has been highlighted lately by the mayors of Swieqi, St Julian’s and Sliema.

But it is not only in these three localities that this is happening. The latest footage uploaded by Cassola was taken in Birkirkara.

“They’re getting bigger,” the veteran politician said, as a rat the size of a grown cat made its way out of a drainage pipe on to the pavement.
