Carlo Mazzone, affable coach, dies aged 86

Carlo Mazzone, who coache a string of teams in a career spanning nearly 40 years, has died, Italian media report. He was 86.

Mazzone started his career at Ascoli in 1968, spending seven years with the club.

He then moved on to coach top clubs like Fiorentina, Napoli, Roma, Cagliari, Bologna, Brescia, Lecce and Perugia.

He is credited with giving the Serie A debut to superstar Francesco Totti and later to having changed the role of Andrea Pirlo to launch his illustrious career. 

Mazzone is the most experienced coach in the Italian football panorama, having coached more than 1,000 professional matches.
