Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa needs to wake up from his slumber and ensure that the police force investigates the allegations that have been made, Opposition Leader Bernard Grech has said.
Grech was referring to allegations made by a former Labour Party activist in a court application as part of a corruption case centred around the top officials at Transport Malta. The activist turned whistleblower claimed knowledge of kickbacks in an illegal identity and citizenship scheme. Maltese citizens of foreign nationality, it was alleged that, ID cards belonging to deceased foreign-born Maltese citizens were given to other foreign residents with the intention of having them vote for Labour in the last election.
Grech said that 48 hours since a former Labour Party official said that he is ready to provide information about people who voted in the general election when they weren't supposed to, the Police Commissioner has not said a single word, Bernard Grech said. He said that 48 hours after this alleged fraud to democracy took place, "we only heard silence from those who are meant to investigate."
The PN leader said that when faced with this scandal that attacks the country's democracy, "we only heard silence from Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà.
He also said that instead of trying to spin these serious allegations being made in a partisan manner, if he has nothing to hide, Robert Abela should join with the PN in calling for a serious investigation into Identity Malta.
