1,563 cases of chlamydia registered over 5 years

From 2018 up till 2022, there were 1,563 cases of chlamydia registered in Malta, Health Minister Chris Fearne revealed.

PN MP Claudette Buttigieg asked a parliamentary question to Fearne, asking for the number of cases of sexually transmitted diseases in the country from the year 2012, up to 2023.

Buttigieg asked for information on chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, HPV, hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, monkeypox, public lice, scabies and genital herpes. Fearne provided the information from 2018 to 2022.

In total, there were 1,563 cases of chlamydia over the past five years, Fearne said. Meanwhile, Malta saw 851 cases of gonorrhea up till 2022.

There were also 560 recorded cases of syphilis, and 553 cases of scabies. Hepatitis B saw 187 cases recorded over the past five years, whilst 172 cases were recorded for Hepatitis C.

Over the past five years, there were also 377 HIV cases, Fearne said.

There were no cases of monkeypox registered in 2018, up till 2021, but the year 2022 saw 33 cases registered.
