Sant accuses Casa of backing motion pushing for abortion, Casa spokesperson rebuts claim

PL MEP Alfred Sant has accused the PN Members of the European Parliament of trying to use European institutions to introduce abortion.

Sant, in reaction to a vote taken on Thursday regarding the rule of law in Malta, said that he was unable to go to the Strasbourg plenary session, but followed it closely.

"A vote took place on the motion regarding the rule of law in Malta that MEP David Casa, as he himself said, strived to bring before the plenary. I was surprised to find that the resolution says, among other things: "(The European Parliament) calls on the Maltese Government to finally enshrine the right to safe and legal abortion in national law, which has previously been announced by the government, but which there has been no legislative process to adopt, while, on the contrary, a restrictive abortion law has been passed".

"I personally believe that, as happened in the case of divorce, a decision regarding if, when and how abortion would be introduced in Malta needs to be taken by the Maltese and Gozitan people alone, freely and democratically."

Despite what was said in Malta, Sant said, "the two PN MPs in the European Parliament are using European institutions to introduce abortion."

Metsola, as the EU Parliament President, does not vote on any votes in the EU Parliament.

However, Sant said that Metsola's said, when she became EU Parliament President, that "abortion has to become a European constitutional right."

He then said that now, Casa gave his patronage to a resolution that pushes the Maltese government to introduce abortion. "I understand that all this is happening with the agreement of the PN."

However, a spokesperson for David Casa told this newsroom that a roll call vote was taken on the particular clause regarding abortion, in which the only two Maltese MEPs who voted against that particular clause were David Casa and Alex Agius Saliba.
