Worker seriously injured last month in crash at Freeport dies in hospital

A worker who was injured in an accident at the Freeport last month has died in hospital, the police said Friday.

The 58-year-old man, Raymond Mifsud, from Marsascala, was injured on 20 October.

Two vehicles used to carry containers were involved in the collision at 1.30am.

The two drivers were a man aged 30 of Rabat and the 58-year-old man from Marsascala.

The 58-year-old was taken to hospital with serious injuries. He died in hospital in the past hours.

Magistrate Gabriella Vella is leading an inquiry.

In a statement, Malta Freeport Terminals said it is deeply saddened to hear that port worker Raymond Mifsud has passed away and wishes to express its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

"Mr Mifsud, a part-time port worker, was seriously injured on October 20 after the truck he was driving collided with another vehicle while carrying out operations on a container ship. The 58-year-old received immediate first aid from the on-duty Freeport nurse before the emergency services arrived to transfer him to hospital. The Freeport is conducting an investigation into the incident."
