Three important points for Naxxar Lions when in the first match played on Sunday at the National Stadium they beat Birkirkara by two goals to nil. A win which put the Lions into sixth place in the standings.
After just two minutes the Stripes went near to break the deadlock but goalkeeper Debono saved a Micalleff free kick.
Naxxar replied on 19 minutes when Carvalho made his way into the opposing area but his conlusion left much to be desired. Three minutes later Zibo saw his shot from the distance sail just over the bar.
Birkirkara were unlucky when ten minutes from the break Satariano’s shot hit the woodwork.
Naxxar Lions took the lead just off the hour mark when Farias fired a shot from the edge of the area beating the Stripes goalkeeper all ends up.
Birkirkara thought that they drew level when in the 63rd minute Satariano found the net only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. And on 70 minutes Debono was once again on the alert to save on Maia.
Five minutes from the end Naxxar put the issue beyond doubt. It was Farias who squared the ball towards Moreira and the latter slotted the ball home from close range.
In the final minutes the Stripes threw everything on the attack but they failed to save the match.
