PN MP appeals for regeneration of Selmun area

Tuesday, 9 January 2024, 19:25 Last update: about 5 months ago

PN MP Robert Cutajar has appealed to the government and the Mellieha Local Council to regenerate the areas of Selmun and Imgiebah.

Speaking in Parliament, he welcomed the recent news that the Finance Ministry has issued a tender for the restoration of Selmun Palace, but said that more needs to be done in the area.

He said that in 2011, a plan had been created in the local council, and EU funds were even used to repair pillboxes, fix rubble walls and more. But after 2013, he said, the plan was shelved.

He asked, why the plan didn't continue being developed. There was a plan to turn the area into a national park, he said.

"I appeal to the local council, why didn't you go through with the plan to devolve fort Campbell?. I understand it would be impossible with the funds it has today, but why didn't the government help them?"

He appealed to Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo and Justice Minister Jonathan Attard, both from the 12th District, to speak to the Environment Minister to try and find the funds needed to regenerate the area, which he said would also be good from a tourism angle.

"This is not a red or blue question. I want that project we gave birth to before 2013 not to die a natural death."
