Over 105,000 foreign workers employed in Malta, Administrative & Support Services hold largest share

Over 105,000 foreign workers were employed in Malta as at the end of 2023, with the Administrative and Support Services sector holding the largest share of these workers.

Finance Minister Clyde Caruana provided statistics in Parliament which showed an increase of 43,032 foreign workers from July 2019 to July 2023.

Labour MP and Government Whip Naomi Cachia asked Finance Minister Clyde Caruana how many foreign workers there were during July of 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. She also asked for which sectors they were working in.

Minister Caruana said that in July 2019, there was a grand total of 62,947 foreign workers. In July 2020, there was a grand total of 70,145 foreign workers. In July 2021, there was a grand total of 73,955 foreign workers. In July 2022, there was a grand total of 86,626 foreign workers. And in July 2023, there was a grand total of 105,979 foreign workers.

Caruana’s statistics show that the sector with the largest amount of foreign workers was that of Administrative & Support Service Activities, which employed 16,362 in July 2023. This was followed by Accommodation & Food Service Activities, which employed 14,923. The sector with the third largest amount of foreign workers was the Construction sector, which employed 10,409.
