At a ceremony held at the Central Bank of Malta, Governor of the Central Bank Professor Edward Scicluna presented a silver coin with the Carnival of Malta theme to Minister for the National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government Owen Bonnici.

Minister Owen Bonnici stated that Carnival is a significant event in Malta’s cultural calendar as it has a historical and heritage significance as well as a lively and contemporary celebration. He thanked the Central Bank of Malta for this gesture which in itself represents a strong sign of appreciation for the sterling work of Carnival enthusiasts.

In his comments, Governor Scicluna stated that the Bank once again is proud to present to the public a newly minted coin representing an aspect of Maltese heritage and popular culture – this time with the theme ‘Karnival ta’ Malta’.

The coin, which has a face value of €10, was minted by the Royal Dutch Mint. It is made in 0.925 silver, has a diameter of 38.61mm and weighs 28.28g. Its quality is proof-like.

The obverse of the coin depicts a dancing female figure wearing a head-mask set against an intricate geometric patter, which is picked out in rainbow colours. The coin encapsulates the festive joy, fun and colour associated with Carnival in Malta. On the reverse is depicted the coat of arms of the Central Bank of Malta.

The presentation was also attended by Festivals Malta Chairperson Aaron Zahra, Chief Executive Officer of Festivals Malta Frans Agius and Artistic Director Jason Busuttil. Also present were Central Bank officials Benoit Waelkens, Chief Officer Banking Operations together with Peter Paul Tabone and Melvin Bugeja from the Currency Operations Office.
