We hope Sofia public inquiry will not have been in vain – Repubblika

Wednesday, 28 February 2024, 07:10 Last update: about 4 months ago

NGO Repubblika said it hoped that the Jean Paul Sofia inquiry will not have been held in vain.

The report on the inquiry is expected to be published today.

It deals with the death of Jean Paul Sofia, 20, who died as a building under construction collapsed in Kordin in December 2022.

The government had initially resisted the idea of a public inquiry, voted against an Opposition motion in this regard but, a few days later, changed its stand as people were gathering in Valletta for a public protest.

In its statement, Repubblika said that apart from the truth regarding the untimely death of Jean Paul, it hoped that it leads to the people involved in the tragedy carry their responsibilities and that measures are taken for similar incidents to be avoided.

The NGO said that the government’s behaviour does not lead one to be optimistic.

The report on the public inquiry into the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia was published 31 months ago and yet the government has not implemented any of the recommendations it listed.
