Malcolm Cutajar has been appointed as Thematic Ambassador for Immigration whilst Mauro Farrugia has been appointed Head Executive for the Agency of International Protection, to replace Malcolm Cutajar's original post, Minister of the Intern, Security and Work Byron Camilleri said.
The presence of a Thematic Ambassador for Immigration was a 2022 electoral promise and aims to strengthen work on immigration locally as well as overseas. This international work will serve to link Malta to the country of origin.
Camilleri said that this work isn't just related to repatriation of migrants who did not qualify for refugee status. Rather, it collaborates with an initiative to prevent people from risking their lives at the hands of human traffickers, government said. Camilleri added that alongside JobsPlus' increased responsibilities, this appointment serves to strengthen Malta's political coordination on legal and illegal immigration.
Cutajar possesses a Bachelors and Masters in International Relations. He has experience in the immigration sector primarily in the Agency of International Protection. In his time at the Agency, he held various posts such as Assistant Commissioner for Refugees between 2017 and 2020 when the Agency was still known as the Office of the Commissioner for Refugees. From 2020 to 2021, he held the post of Deputy Head Executive and finally in November he was made the Executive Head.
Mauro Farrugia obtained a Bachelors Degree in Psychology from the University of Malta and has worked directly with the disabled, with troubled teens and with people from many different cultures who were seeking asylum. He had done this as the Head Executive for the Agency of Protection for Asylum Seekers. He has also served as the Commissioner for Care and Development for Prisoners.
