The Regatta Club of Birżebbuġa, a local club dedicated to the sport of rowing and the Maltese regatta tradition, will have a warehouse in Birżebbuġa itself for storing boats and housing the club's new offices, a government statement read.

This development was announced by the Minister for Education and Sport Clifton Grima along with Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works Omar Farrugia as an agreement was signed between the club and the Department for Public Works.

Minister Grima said that this investment is another agreement which shows the government's commitment to strengthening the sports sector and raising the level of Maltese sport at every level. He continued that this agreement shows their commitment to fulfilling sports electoral promises, with the goal that sports clubs and federations have the tools and facilities to continue growing.

The Ministry for Education and Sports said that the building will consist of two storeys and an underground area once it is constructed. It will be found on the shore of Birżebbuġa near a slipway which provides easy access to the sea for the rowers.

The building will be constructed in a currently abandoned area and will be outfitted with facilities according to the club's needs. The Ministry added that the basement and first floor of the building will be used as a warehouse for the boats while the second floor will serve as office space from which the club administration will operate.

Parliamentary Secretary Omar Farrugia said that when the government met with the club's administration and was presented with the challenges the club was facing, the government intervened quickly to ensure that the club continued to operate and bring more children and young people into the regatta tradition. "In fact, apart from several logistical challenges, the biggest challenge for this club is that of nurturing new children in this sport, since the warehouses that are currently rented are outside the area," he said, continuing that now through this project the children and young people of Birżebbuġa will be able to meet and practice the sport in a local area.

The President of the Regatta Club of Birżebbuġa Ian Farrugia said that the club is commemorating the twentieth anniversary of its establishment this year and that throughout those years the club has never had its own building and has always operated from a rented Valletta warehouse. He said that this has presented several challenges for the administration as well as the rowers, particularly the younger people interested in starting to get involved in the sport.

Farrugia concluded by thanking the government for this project and said that it will make a big difference for all enthusiasts of the sport, not just in Birżebbuġa but in surrounding areas as well.
