Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna on Thursday called on the new President of the Republic to lift virtues listed in the national anthem during her five-year term in office.

In his homily during a Mass held before Myriam Spiteri Debono is to be sworn in as Malta’s 11th President, Scicluna reminded the congregation that the early Christian community in Malta was encouraged by St Paul, during his stay, to elect a civil leader in order to live in peace and goodness. He said that this prayer is renewed today.

The archbishop once again examined the virtues called upon us by Dun Karm Psaila’s ‘Innu Malti’ and prayed for God to bless the new President with them.

Firstly, wisdom in every aspect of her presidency, to uphold the constitution and human rights, ensure respectful dialogues, work against corruption and defend the environment, he said.

Scicluna continued with mercy, which he said the president cultivated with her sense of social justice, in order to comfort those in struggle, to be the light for those who are lost, show solidarity and give concrete help to those who need it.

Finally, he mentioned strength; physical, mental, moral as well as the strength to show courage and enthusiasm. He added that a sense of humour would help make the president’s heavy responsibility lighter.

Scicluna urged the President to be a shield for the weak and those without a voice and to protect life from its beginning to its natural end.

He prayed that the president will carry on the work of her predecessors with loyalty and to strive for the harmony of the Maltese islands. Scicluna reminded her that when she represents Malta, she must represent it with the spirit of our sweet and protective land.

“God will always be with you” he concluded.
