Comedian James Ryder has officially launched his MEP election campaign, and urged audiences on Friday to brace themselves for a campaign like no other as he gears up for the upcoming European elections next June.
In a video posted on his Facebook page, the independent candidate emphasised that, like everyone else, he is a Maltese citizen and 'a proud European.' He stated that his objective is to preserve the remaining beauty in Malta and strive to create a place that future generations would take pride in.
“I am taking this very seriously… it doesn’t mean I will be handling it seriously. I will be running this campaign as honestly as I can, and that mean you are going to be treated… or subjected to, an election campaign like no other,” he said in his announcement video on Facebook.
Ryder, known for his comedy, announced his candidature on April 1st, coincidentally April Fool's Day. What many thought was a well-worked prank however turned out to be serious, as the comedian said that he was actually going to run for a seat in Brussels.
In a statement featured on his website, Ryder expressed his belief that a genuine politician ought to represent the everyday person, a role he feels he exemplifies.
At the heart of his campaign lie three fundamental pledges: to listen attentively, to continually educate himself, and to inject humour into the political sphere. With a cheeky flair, his website humorously declares a commitment to "smoke you," a light-hearted gesture toward his dedication to engaging with voters.
Ryder, renowned for his comedic sketches on TikTok and his role as host of The Late Night Show, brings an unconventional approach that goes beyond words.
He has already laid out plans to visit educational institutions like MCAST and the University, aiming to forge connections with Maltese youth through a blend of humour and serious political discussion.
Promising to catalyse a new wave of involvement in the European Union, Ryder is promising a vibrant exchange that transcends traditional boundaries.
