Nine die, 15 missing in latest migrant shipwreck in Maltese waters, Italian media report

Nine people, including a little girl, have died in the latest shipwreck in Maltese Search and Rescue waters, Italian news agency ANSA reports.

Another 15 migrants are believed to be missing.

There were 23 survivors rescued by the Coast Guard, with one of them dying on arrival.

Six shipwrecked survivors currently remain hospitalized in a health facility in Lampedusa, while the other 16 have been accompanied to the hotspot in the Imbriacola district.

The condition of the 6 hospitalized patients is considered critical, ANSA reports.

From testimonies give n by survivors, it results that 46 migrants were travelling on the boat. The migrants were originally from Guinea, Burkina Faso, Mali and Ivory Coast, and they left Sunday evening from Sfax in Tunisia.

According to this reconstruction there would therefore be 15 missing, including 3 minors. Among the survivors there are five women.

The sea conditions in the area of ​​the shipwreck are prohibitive, ANSA reports. Some victims reportedly died from hypothermia on the way to Lampedusa.
