20 shortcomings related to food service in elderly homes pinpointed in authority inspections

The Elderly Persons Standards Authority has conducted a total of 254 inspections in elderly homes between January and March of 2024, noting 272 shortcomings, 20 of which were related to the food provided in these homes.

Active Ageing Minister Jo Etienne Abela was replying to a parliamentary question made by PN MP Graziella Galea, who asked if there were any inspections conducted by the authority, where they were conducted, and the results of each inspection, particularly with regards to the food being provided to the elderly.

Abela tabled information of the homes which were inspected by the authority in January, February, and March of this year. He said that out of the 272 shortcomings, 20 were related to the food service in the elderly homes.

There were 110 inspections conducted in January 2024, with the highest number of inspections being carried out at Casa Antonia (seven inspections), a residential home in Balzan.

The authority conducted a total of 84 inspections in February 2024, with six inspections being carried out in Villa Anna Teresa in Birkirkara.

A total of 60 inspections were conducted in March of this year, where six inspections were carried out in Central Home, Mosta.
