Police carried out raids in connection to "Russian interference" in the European Parliament, according to a statement by the Belgian federal prosecutor, Politico reports.
The searches were carried out at a private residence in Brussels and in EU Parliament offices in both Brussels and Strasbourg, it said. These searches are linked to Russiagate, "where MEPs were allegedly approached and paid to promote Russian propaganda via the Voice of Europe website," Politico reports, quoting Belgian law enforcement as saying that there are indications that an EU Parliament employee played a significant role.
Politico quotes sources as saying that police are looking into the connections of a parliamentary assistant, who had worked for a far-right alternative party in Germany, and who now works for a Dutch MEP.
"According to two people familiar with the investigation who were granted anonymity to discuss the sensitive issue, Belgian police are looking into the connections of a parliamentary assistant who has worked for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD)"
One news painted the article in a misleading way to target Roberta Metsola.
