Transport Minister Chris Bonett inaugurated the two bridges that provide access to Fort St. Angelo in Birgu and the waterfront area in front of the fort's entrance.
With an expenditure of around €3 million, Infrastructure Malta carried out a project to develop a pedestrian bridge and another for vehicles, replacing the previous bridge that was used by both vehicles and pedestrians.
In June of last year, the existing bridge was closed to vehicles after part of it collapsed. This bridge was built by the British Services and designed for much lighter loads than the vehicles that had been passing over it in recent years, leading to numerous damages over time.
After the bridge was closed, Infrastructure Malta decided to demolish it and build two new bridges instead: one for vehicles and one for pedestrians, providing safe accessibility for those walking in the area.
Bonett said that projects like these are the result of the government's commitment to creating safer and higher-quality infrastructure while providing the best facilities for Maltese people, tourists, and those using the marina in an area like the Birgu Waterfront.
"When we visited this project last January, I promised that these bridges, which will provide safe access for anyone visiting this site, would be completed as quickly and with as little inconvenience as possible,” Bonett said.
He expressed appreciation to Infrastructure Malta for their continuous work, especially those in the maritime section who, despite having to work according to the sea's elements, always deliver highly professional results that “will leave a legacy of a more beautiful and modern Malta.”
CEO of Infrastructure Malta Ivan Falzon said IM’s work will continue to focus on improving accessibility while ensuring that everyone reaches their destination safely and efficiently.
During the project, IM recognized the historical value of this site and maintained direct contact with the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, involving this entity from the very beginning of the project and contributing to the design while overseeing the ongoing work.
Currently, a restoration project is underway on the structure of the old bridge, which will be exhibited within the site's confines.
