The Labour Party has hung onto the majority in Malta’s capital city, Valletta, according to unofficial party projections.
Olaf McKay has been elected as mayor of the council, replacing Alfred Zammit. McKay was a new candidate to the locality.
The PL won 1,806 votes – equivalent to 55.35% - while the PN won 1,262 votes – equivalent to 38.68%. The resident’s groups Residenti Beltin won 150 votes while another independent candidate – former Malta goalkeeper Reggie Cini – won 45 votes.
The PL increased its vote share, as it won 53.02% back in the 2019 election.
McKay was elected as mayor with 564 votes to his name – just 32 votes ahead of previous mayor Alfred Zammit, who won 532 votes.
This was a significant battleground after the PL won a majority for the first time ever in the local council in the 2019 elections.
Valletta elects 7 local councillors, who are: McKay as mayor, Zammit as deputy mayor, Raymond Azzopardi and Daniel Diacono for the PL, and Ylenia Montfort, Roberta Bonello, and Vincent Fabri for the PN.
