“This is a great victory, not only for the Nationalist Party … but it is a great victory for the residents of Siggiewi,” were newly elected Siggiewi Mayor Julian Borg’s first words to the media in the Naxxar counting hall after voting indications predicted a relatively comfortable PN victory in the previously Labour-majority locality.
Borg continued that the PN’s victory in the locality was a testament to the determination that there can be good proposals. “A victory for the courage that a council can truly make the right decisions, and a victory for the hope that Siggiewi truly can become better,” he said.
Speaking about intentions moving forward, Borg said that he and his team will need to work together with the other elected Siggiewi councillors, including those from the Labour Party, “so that we can recover what we lost and push Siggiewi forward”.
He concluded by saying that at the moment, he has no exact indication regarding vote or seat distribution in the locality.
Siggiewi was very much in the news during the campaign, which was at the centre of attention during the campaign when it was revealed that there had been an attempt to change the addresses of 99 families to a block which was still uninhabitable.
The courts reversed the exercise, calling for an investigation.
It is apparent that this stunt worked against Labour, as the majority of voters voted PN in this election.
