PN MP Robert Cutajar has, in Parliament, insisted with Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri to immediately re-open the police station in Mellieha.
The Mellieha police station has been closed since 2020, a decision by the Home Affairs Ministry who said that residents have been better served since the introduction of community policing a year prior.
The Ministry had said that the police station’s closure led to more officers on the beat, more frequent patrols, and high satisfaction levels among the public.
In a Facebook post, Cutajar said that he hoped that common sense would prevail, and the wish of the Mellieha community would be appreciated.
“Even more so now that both political parties promised to do so in the last Local Council electoral programmes,” Cutajar said.
After the past Local Council elections, Mellieha was deadlocked, with the PL and PN each electing four councillors, while Matthew Borg Cuschieri was elected as an independent councillor.
The Nationalist Party's Gabriel Micallef will be mayor of Mellieha for the next five years after a proposal submitted by Labour councillors was turned down by Borg Cuschieri.
