The 2024 edition of SkolaSajf kicked off yesterday with more than 12,000 student applicants. This year's edition, through the theme "Life is my Adventure," saw an increase in the number of applications from previous years, the government said.

This year's edition of SkolaSajf is being carried out in 54 centres across Malta and Gozo from Monday to Friday. Having begun on 10 July, this summer's SkolaSajf programme will continue until 6 September, with a nine-day break in between 9 August and 19 August.

While the programme runs from 08:30-12:30 on weekdays, an extended service is also available to better accommodate working parents. The times for this service are split in selected centres from 07:00-08:30 and from 12:30-17:30.

With the number of applications increasing once again this year, the Minister for Education, Clifton Grima, labelled this service as a great success. Over 12,000 applications were counted both this year and last year; in contrast, 2020 saw a total of 7,849 applications.

"SkolaSajf is an excellent service that is not just part of our vision and efforts so that the education system reflects the needs and realities of present society," Minister Grima said, "it is a service through which we nurture children from a young age through alternative learning that will help them in their futures."

Grima also said that his Education Ministry, through initiatives like Klabb 3-16 and SkolaSajf, has continued to strengthen the services that contribute to the long-term educational path of students.

"We strengthened these services to reach more children and promote learning outside of school hours," Minister Grima stated.

Through SkolaSajf's programme of informal educational activities, thousands of children are being given an extended educational service. The students will enjoy a variety of activities, outings, sports games, and more as part of this programme.

The number of public and private entities participating in this summer initiative is also said to be on the rise. Last year, 90 entities ranging from private companies to non-governmental organisations participated in the 2023 edition of SkolaSajf.
