High voltage cable faults lead to power cuts in central Malta, Gozo

Saturday, 20 July 2024, 10:08 Last update: about 12 months ago

It’s another summer of power cuts.

Enemalta says on its website that it is currently addressing issues in parts of Malta and Gozo.

Areas in Gzira, St Julian’s, Msida and San Gwann in Malta, and San Lawrenz, Kercem, Gharb and Ghasri are without electricity.

Enemalta said on its Facebook page that technical teams are addressing network difficulties on our distribution network in parts of St. Julian’s and Gzira in Malta, and Għasri, Għarb, San Lawrenz and Kercem, in Gozo.

Repair works started immediately on high voltage cable faults detected last night.

In Gzira, two faults developed on our 33kv cables, which are an integral part of our distribution network in the area. In Gozo, three 11kV cables fault in Għasri developed which supply electricity to nearby areas.

Where technically possible, Enemalta said it is using alternative sources of energy until repairs on these faults are addressed.

Electricity supply in parts of St. Julian’s, Gzira, Għasri, Għarb, San Lawrenz and Kercem will be restored once these works are completed. These cable faults isolated these areas from the national grid, therefore supply will be restored to all our customers once these repairs are completed.

Last summer, most notably in July, Malta and Gozo suffered from extensive power cuts, some of which lasted more than a day.

The government had said at the time that it was to embark on a plan to improve the distribution network.

Apparently, not enough has been done.
