The Labour Party has announced that it's General Conference, during which elections for the positions of deputy leaders and other administrative roles will take place, will be held from the 13th to the 15th of September.
On the 13th of September, elections will be held for the deputy leadership posts and for others within the PL administration elected from the party's General Conference, the party said.
The Labour Party recently lost both its deputy leaders. Chris Fearne announced that he would not be re-contesting, after a court decree found enough prima facie evidence for him to be indicted in the hospitals case. The PL’s other deputy leader Daniel Micallef, who is responsible for party affairs, had already declared his intention to quit soon after the European Parliament and local council elections in June.
With regards to the deputy leadership positions, the party said, in a case where there are more than two candidates and none obtain more than 50%+1 of the votes, a second round of voting between the two candidates with the most votes will take place on the 14th of September. Early voting for those who cannot vote on the 13th will be held on Saturday, the 7th of September.
The administrative positions elected by the General Conference include those of President, Vice-President, International Secretary, and Organizational Secretary. Elections will also be held for the 12 ordinary members of the National Executive, as stipulated by the Labour Party Statute, the party said.
"Nominations for all positions will open on Friday, the 23rd of August, and will remain open until the 25th of August. The elections will be managed by the Labour Party's Electoral Commission. The General Conference will conclude on Sunday, the 15th of September, with a speech by the Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party, Robert Abela."
